Argentina Advances Federal Pharmacovigilance Network

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the National Administration of Medicines, Foods and Medical Technology (ANMAT) are advancing the creation of a federal pharmacovigilance network in Argentina. The goal is to strengthen the capabilities for the detection, reporting, and analysis of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs).

This initiative is part of a process towards a decentralized structure with national leadership, aimed at ensuring the continuous training of system actors and standardizing processes nationwide. The strategic objective is to contribute to the fulfillment of international standards and consolidate ANMAT as a Regional Reference Regulatory Authority (ARNr).

During the opening, the PAHO Advisor on Health Systems and Services in Argentina, Cristóbal Cuadrado, highlighted that “PAHO has technically cooperated with ANMAT and the Ministry of Health of the Nation to strengthen the federal and subnational capacities of pharmacovigilance” through training and regulatory harmonization processes.

As emphasized, this joint work seeks to strengthen the national system for controlling medicines and position Argentina as a regional benchmark in regulatory and sanitary matters.

Representatives from Mendoza, Chubut, Córdoba, Misiones, Santa Fe, Neuquén, and the City of Buenos Aires participated in person, while Entre Ríos and Río Negro did so virtually. Additionally, the following day, ANMAT held the XVIII meeting with peripheral actors of the national pharmacovigilance system, where PAHO provided specific training on vaccines and pharmacovigilance, risk management, and communication.
